Remove Friction and Find Your Flow: Strategies For Effective Leadership
Welcome to 2025! It’s been a glorious start to the New Year. I’m a big fan of a New Year, a new month and even a fresh new Monday. The opportunity, the planning, the possibility, it makes me very excited.
This is my first Article back after quite a long and much needed break. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks (months if I’m honest) in reflection on the wild year that was 2024. You can hear about those reflections on my podcast.
This week I’ve been thinking a lot about flow, getting (back) into rhythm. My word for this year is BALANCE. I’d love to know what your word of the year is. Hit reply and let me know. When I think about flow in leadership, about achieving a state of flow, it’s where you’re fully immersed, focused, and productive.
Well, that’s the ultimate goal. But often, friction gets in the way. I think at the beginning of any New Year there’s momentum, there’s energy and excitement about what to add for the year.
Can I challenge you to think about what you might to less of this year. So often we’re caught up in doing the next thing, that we forget about removing the friction points first.
Friction can take many forms: obstacles, inefficiencies, or even internal doubts that hinder your progress and disrupt your flow. The key to effective leadership is identifying and removing this friction so you can lead with ease and efficiency.
When it comes to Flow and Friction, I think there's three key parts. Identifying Friction Points, Removing Friction Points and then Finding your Flow:
Identifying Friction Points
The first step in removing friction is identifying where it exists. Friction can manifest in various ways, such as:
Inefficient Processes: Are there outdated or overly complicated procedures that slow down progress? Streamlining these processes can reduce friction and improve productivity.
Team Dynamics: Are there conflicts or communication breakdowns within your team? Addressing these issues can create a more harmonious and collaborative work environment.
Personal Blocks: Are you experiencing self-doubt, fear of failure, or lack of confidence? These internal frictions can be just as disruptive as external ones and need to be addressed to find your flow.
Once you’ve identified the sources of friction, you can begin to address them.
Removing Friction: Strategies for Success
Here are some strategies to help you remove friction and find your flow in leadership:
Streamline Processes: Take a close look at your current processes and identify areas where you can simplify or automate tasks. This might involve implementing new tools or software, delegating tasks more effectively, or eliminating unnecessary steps. The goal is to create a more efficient workflow that minimises friction and maximises productivity.
Improve Communication: Open and effective communication is key to reducing friction within your team. Encourage regular check-ins, provide clear instructions, and foster an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. By improving communication, you can prevent misunderstandings and ensure everyone is on the same page.
Address Conflicts Head-On: Don’t let unresolved conflicts fester within your team. Address them directly and constructively. This may involve having difficult conversations, mediating disputes, or setting clear expectations. By resolving conflicts quickly, you can prevent them from creating ongoing friction that disrupts your team’s flow.
Encourage Collaboration: Foster a culture of collaboration where team members are encouraged to share ideas, provide feedback, and work together toward common goals. Collaboration reduces friction by ensuring that everyone is aligned and working efficiently toward the same objectives.
Prioritise Self-Care: Personal friction often arises from burnout or lack of focus. Prioritise self-care by setting boundaries, taking breaks, and engaging in activities that recharge your energy. A well-rested and focused leader is better equipped to find and maintain flow.
Finding Your Flow
I think finding flow worlds differently for everyone. For me personally, having some solo time is really necessary. Getting out in nature and making sure my own cup is full, is the first step for me.
Once you’ve removed the sources of friction, you’ll find it easier to achieve a state of flow in your leadership. Flow is that sweet spot where you’re fully engaged, productive, and effective. It’s where you’re able to make decisions quickly, solve problems efficiently, and lead your team with confidence.
Here’s how I find and maintain flow:
Set Clear Goals: Flow is easier to achieve when you have clear, specific goals. Break down larger tasks into manageable steps and focus on one task at a time. This will help you stay focused and avoid feeling overwhelmed (you can download my goalsetting workbook here)
Minimise Distractions: Identify and eliminate distractions that pull you out of flow. This might mean turning off notifications, setting aside dedicated time for focused work, or creating a workspace that promotes concentration. (I highly recommend Dr Kristy Goodwin's book: Digital we need to talk)

Stay Present: Flow requires being fully present in the moment. Practice mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, to keep your mind focused on the task at hand. (I also use an app called brain.fm which is great for getting into a focused state).
Celebrate Progress: Recognise and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Celebrating progress reinforces your commitment to your goals and keeps you motivated to stay in flow.
Removing friction and finding flow are essential for effective leadership. I’m a big believer in starting the year off as you intend to continue. By streamlining processes, improving communication, and addressing conflicts head-on, you can create an environment where you and your team can thrive.
Remember, flow is not just about being productive, it’s about being fully engaged in your work, leading with confidence, and achieving your goals with ease. Embrace these strategies, and watch as your leadership reaches new levels of effectiveness and success.
